Georgia Driving Academy (GDA) has been preparing commercial drivers for careers on the road since 1996. That is 30 years of hands-on truck driver training in Georgia, starting with a single Class A program that has since graduated thousands of students. Today, GDA offers multiple CDL training programs across three Georgia campuses to meet the needs of career changers, experienced drivers looking to sharpen their skills, and organizations that need custom training solutions.
All GDA programs combine classroom instruction with behind-the-wheel training and are fully compliant with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements. Whether someone is starting from zero experience or returning to the industry after a gap, there is a program designed to get them road-ready.
Class A CDL Training
The Class A CDL program is built for students with no prior commercial driving experience, or for those who have been out of the industry for several years. It covers everything needed to operate a tractor-trailer combination vehicle, including:
- Pre-trip inspection
- Backing maneuvers
- Shifting
- On-road driving.
GDA offers two Class A program options: a 160-hour program and a 180-hour program. Students who complete the 180-hour program are not restricted to automatic transmission vehicles, giving them the broadest range of job opportunities upon graduation.
Students who complete the program earn a certificate that qualifies them as entry-level CDL drivers. Graduates are prepared to pursue both over-the-road (OTR) and local driving positions.
Class B CDL Training
The Class B CDL program is designed for students with little or no experience operating a Class B commercial vehicle. This program covers the skills needed to drive:
- Straight trucks
- School buses
- Motorcoaches
- Class B automatic vehicles
The Class B program is 70 hours and includes both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training time. Graduates are prepared to take the Georgia CDL skills test and pursue careers in passenger transport, delivery, and other Class B roles.
CDL Refresher Course
The CDL refresher course is for licensed Class A or Class B drivers who have at least one year of experience but have been out of the driver’s seat for three to five years. Training is conducted one-on-one and focuses on the three core areas where returning drivers most often need to rebuild confidence: pre-trip inspection, backing maneuvers, and road instruction.
Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Endorsement Training
GDA offers a six-hour HAZMAT training course for students who want to add the “H” endorsement to their CDL. The course meets all FMCSA requirements and is available at all three GDA campuses. Students must have completed the required ELDT coursework for their CDL class before enrolling in HAZMAT training. After completing the six-hour course, students are eligible to take the state-administered endorsement test.
Customized CDL Training Programs
GDA also builds customized commercial driver training programs for corporations, government agencies, and all branches of the military. These programs are tailored to the specific vehicles, routes, and operational needs of the organization requesting training.
Three Campus Locations Across Georgia
GDA operates three campuses to serve students throughout the state. Each location offers the same curriculum, qualified instructors, and range facilities needed to prepare students for the Georgia CDL skills test.
Tuition Assistance Options
The cost of CDL training is one of the first questions most prospective students have. GDA works with students to explore financing options that fit their situation, including WIOA funding, GI Bill benefits for veterans, and other assistance programs. Students can get started with a first payment as low as $225.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age requirement to enroll in CDL training in Georgia?
Students must be at least 18 years old to obtain a CDL in Georgia, though drivers under 21 are restricted to intrastate (within Georgia) driving only. Drivers must be 21 or older to operate a commercial vehicle across state lines.
Does a student need a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) before starting training?
No. GDA walks students through the permit process during the classroom portion of training. Behind-the-wheel instruction begins after the CLP has been secured.
Can someone with a felony or serious driving offense get a CDL in Georgia?
Certain convictions, including DUI and felonies involving a commercial vehicle, can result in disqualification. Students with concerns about their driving or criminal history should speak with a GDA admissions advisor before enrolling.
What is the difference between a Class A and Class B CDL?
A Class A CDL allows drivers to operate tractor-trailers and combination vehicles, which opens the door to over-the-road and long-haul careers. A Class B CDL covers straight trucks, school buses, and motorcoaches, and is better suited for local and passenger transport roles.
Does GDA help graduates find driving jobs after completing training?
Yes. GDA offers job placement assistance to help graduates connect with carriers and employers. For more information, prospective students should ask an admissions advisor about available placement resources.
Does GDA accept financial aid, grants, or employer-sponsored tuition?
Yes. GDA works with students to explore options, including WIOA funding, GI Bill benefits for veterans, and employer-sponsored tuition reimbursement programs. Contact our admissions team to learn about what tuition assistance programs you may qualify for.
What should someone do before the first day of class?
Students will need a valid Georgia driver’s license and a DOT physical and drug screen before training begins. A GDA admissions advisor can provide a full checklist and walk prospective students through each step.
